Warnings
- This is not a toy! Independent operation is intended for users older than 15 years. Younger users require proper adult supervision.
- Failure to operate or maintain this vehicle safely can result in bodily harm.
- Replace damaged components with original factory parts only. Pay special attention to the polarity of all vehicle wiring.
- Use only the genuine KAVAN LiPo battery pack specified for the GRT-16 Tracker. Do not overcharge or overdischarge the battery as doing so may cause the battery to become a fire hazard. If the battery should become hot during charging, discontinue charging immediately and disconnect the battery from the charger.
- Never leave the battery unattended while charging. If you are unsure of how to charge this battery, please seek the advice of experienced RC users. Never let children charge the battery without adult supervision.
- The motor will become hot during use. Allow 10–15 minutes between runs for the vehicle to cool down. Doing so will prolong the life of your vehicle.
- Use common sense when selecting the environment to operate your vehicle. Do not run it in the streets, car parks or anywhere you can run into a full-size car, people or animals. Do not operate near power cables, cellular/radio towers, deep water or unstable terrain. The operator is solely responsible for their actions.
- The product is composed of precision electrical components. It is critical to keep the product away from moisture and other contaminants. If exposed to a humid environment, make sure the electronics are fully dried before using them again.
- Always check the radio range of the vehicle before operation to prevent damage to your model due to radio loss or interference.
- Operate this product to your ability. If the vehicle is dangerous to retrieve from a place, do not risk injury to retrieve it.
- Follow the model-specific Power on and pair procedure with the wheels clear of the ground. Always switch off the vehicle and remove its battery before switching off the transmitter.
- Never allow transmitter batteries to run low as it may cause loss of vehicle control.
- Plastics on the vehicle are flammable and susceptible to damage or deformation due to extreme heat and cold climates. Do not store the model near any source of heat such as an oven or heater. Store the model indoors, in a dry, room-temperature environment.
- Never shorten the receiver antenna; this may affect the operational range of your radio system.
Lithium polymer battery safety
- Never charge a lithium polymer battery with a charger designed for NiCd, NiMH, or any other type of battery than LiPo. Use ONLY a charger designed for LiPo batteries.
- Do not leave the LiPo battery unattended during charging.
- Do not overcharge the battery.
- Always charge LiPo batteries placed on non-flammable, heat-resistant surfaces.
- Use of a LiPo-safe bag or container while charging is strongly recommended. Do not allow LiPo cells to overheat at any time. Cells heated above 60 °C are likely to be damaged and present a fire risk.
- Do not charge the LiPo pack while it is still in the model. Never charge or store battery packs in a vehicle.
- Do not over-discharge LiPo; doing so will damage the battery.
- Do not expose LiPo cells to water or moisture at any time.
- Do not store battery near open flame or heater.
- Do not assemble LiPo cells or pre-assembled packs together with other LiPo cells or packs.
- Always store LiPo batteries in a secure location away from children.
- Always remove the LiPo battery if the model is involved in any kind of crash.
- Carefully inspect the battery and connectors for even the smallest damage.
- Do not allow the electrolyte to get into the eyes or on the skin. Wash affected areas immediately if they come into contact with electrolytes. Do not alter or modify the connectors or wires of a LiPo battery pack.
- Always inspect the condition of the battery before charging and operating.
- Do not short-circuit the LiPo battery.
- Avoid direct contact with a leaky/damaged battery.
- Do not charge the battery out of the recommended temperature range (0–30 °C).
Cells may become hot after usage. Allow the pack to cool to room temperature before recharging.
Main section
Remove the body and prepare the transmitter
- Pull out the four body clips and lift off the body. Check that all accessories are attached and peel the protective film from the body.
- Slide off the transmitter battery cover. Install three fresh 1.5 V AA alkaline batteries in the marked polarity, then replace the cover.
- Do not mix different types, old and new cells. Remove exhausted batteries and keep them away from children.
- Set the speed switch to L while learning.
Charge and install the drive battery
- With the model switched off, rotate both battery locks until they click into the released position. Remove the battery.
- Check that the case, output terminals and charging socket are completely dry.
- Connect the battery to the supplied USB charger, then connect the charger to a 5 V / 2 A USB supply. Its green LED flashes during charging.
- After approximately 120 minutes, a steady green LED indicates a fully charged battery. Disconnect the charger from the supply and battery.
- Fit the battery in the indicated direction and rotate both locks until they click into the secured position.
Water on the battery terminals or in the charging socket can cause fire or explosion. Do not connect a wet battery. Charge outside the vehicle under constant supervision.
Power on and pair
- Support the vehicle with all wheels clear of the ground and keep the throttle trigger at neutral.
- Press and hold the vehicle ON/OFF button for 3 seconds.
- Switch on the transmitter. It pairs with the vehicle automatically.
- Confirm that the vehicle headlights remain steadily lit. The transmitter indicator is red at rest and turns green when you move the steering wheel or trigger.
| Indication | Meaning/action |
|---|---|
| Headlights flashing; transmitter LED flashing green | Not paired; check the pairing procedure |
| Headlights steady; transmitter LED red at rest | Paired |
| Headlights start flashing during use | Drive battery low; stop and recharge |
| Headlights flash rapidly | Vehicle fault; stop and inspect |
| Transmitter LED flashes red slowly | Transmitter batteries low; replace them |
Check the controls
- Turn the wheel left and right. The front wheels must follow the same direction. If the direction is wrong, change the steering reverse switch between NOR and REV.
- Centre the wheel. Adjust ST.TRIM until the vehicle tracks straight: turn clockwise if it veers left, counterclockwise if it veers right.
- Pull the trigger gently for forward drive. Release it to neutral to decelerate. Push it forward to brake; after the vehicle stops, return to neutral and push again for reverse.
- Turn ST.D/R clockwise for more steering travel or counterclockwise for less (approximately 10–48°).
- Keep the speed selector at L for half speed. Select H only after you can reliably control steering, braking and reverse.
- Check radio response throughout the intended driving area. Do not drive if control is delayed or intermittent.
Fit the body and practise driving
- Fit the body and secure all four clips.
- Start on a wide, open, dry surface at low speed. Avoid slippery floors and confined indoor spaces.
- Practise a circle, then a figure of eight. Increase speed only after steering and braking become familiar.
- On the first run with a charged battery, drive smoothly at approximately half throttle on a flat surface for that charge to bed in the motor brushes. Skipping this running-in can reduce motor performance and service life.
- Avoid frequent turns, repeated abrupt starts and stops, pushing objects, tall grass, puddles, deep water and continuous uphill running. These loads can overheat the motor.
- Between runs, allow 10–15 minutes for cooling.
Stop and maintain the vehicle
- Return the trigger to neutral and stop the model. Switch the vehicle off, remove the battery and only then switch the transmitter off.
- Remove dirt from the suspension, drive shafts and steering with a soft brush or compressed air. Do not use aggressive chemicals or solvents.
- Check all screws, wheels and parts for damage or looseness. Check that the drivetrain and steering move freely before and after each run. Apply a small amount of grease suitable for plastic gears where needed.
- Store the model dry at room temperature, away from heat, extreme cold and children. Protect the electronics from dust and prolonged direct sunlight. Motors, servos and gears wear in normal use and may need replacement.
Protection functions
The supplied charger limits charging voltage. The battery includes low-voltage/current protection; if it cuts off, recharge it with the supplied charger to reactivate it. Do not deliberately run to deep discharge. The ESC can interrupt forward/reverse operation for approximately 3–6 seconds when overheated. Stop and let the model cool instead of repeatedly loading the protection circuit.
